The Intellisonde is a water quality monitoring probe that can be inserted In-Pipe to capture and report real-time data across up to 11 individual sensors, transmitting measurements direct to desktops and mobile devices or integration with existing SCADA infrastructure. When used throughout distribution networks, the Intellisonde provides a water monitoring system that ensures consistent quality from treatment to tap. Intellitect is internationally recognised in the area of potable water quality within water distribution systems. This is a vital last line of defence in ensuring that high quality water fit for human consumption is delivered at our taps. The rapid growth in cities creates significant challenges to water utility companies that are already encountering failures with increasing frequency due to aging infrastructure. The result has been higher energy consumption, higher maintenance costs, significant water losses, inefficiencies in system operation, and concerns about the quality of drinking water that is delivered to the consumer. The infrastructure used to deliver this vital service is ageing, deteriorating and buried
While it is known that distribution systems degrade the high quality product produced from modern water treatment works, little is known about how, when and where. This is primarily due to a reliance on discrete sampling and laboratory analysis that cannot provide an insight into the complexity and the spatial and temporal diversity of reactions and interactions occurring.
The implementation of monitoring systems for water supply companies is critical to the grounded knowledge of customer behavior and their own supply systems. To meet this need, the Intellitect Water developed the Intellisonde, a multiparameter probe for direct insertion into pressurized pipe, which may be allocated in various parts of the network, for greater control of it.
The multi parameter water quality monitor with insertion type sensors be suitable for the Qatar climate is directly inserted into the pipeline at certain locations designated for water quality monitoring in the water distribution network (DMA). The equipment is installed within a purpose built concrete chamber over the pipeline for ease of access. An equipment cabinet installed over the chamber above ground level to house the transmitters, communication equipment and power supply
The equipment used analog and modbus output, allowing the interface to the existing telemetry network. The project allowed the evaluation of the quality of the recorded data and tested the ability to integrate data from remote monitoring network to the network management system. The data generated were used for network diagnostic and allow improvements in the process, as part of a proactive approach to the management of the distribution network.
The measured parameters were: temperature, pH, turbidity, conductivity, total disinfectant, chlorine dioxide and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and the determined time between the measurements was 15 minutes. The software was programmed to trigger alarms for any value outside the limits, Using Intellisondes captured real-time data that can be remotely transmitted to anywhere in the world we offer a solution to these issues.

- These advances help eliminate uncertainty resulting from on-site calibration errors and substantially reduce the time and cost of on-site installation and calibration. The Intellisonde operates without chemicals or membranes and has eleven water quality parameters available for configuration. Each probe can be individually configured to suit its location in the network. Insertion in most cases is directly into the water pipe, providing the most accurate point to monitor and control water quality. The Intellisonde represents a major leap forward in network monitoring.
Low cost installation & ownership
Reagent-free and membrane-less technology the Intellisonde can be installed into a distribution system and be providing water quality data.
The sonde can fit into large pressurised pipes or down to a minimum 4” (100mm) diameter pipe. A threaded extension is located on a standard valve. An adjustable collar allows the sonde to be set to a pre-determined depth, with the optimum being in the centre of the flow.
The embedded calibrations and reagent and membrane less technology substantially reduces the time and cost of on-site installation, maintenance and calibration compared to traditional technologies.
Power is provided via an external IP68 battery pack or 24V DC power supply. Due to advanced low power consumption technology the Intellisonde is able to run on the recommended battery supply for up to six months contributing to low cost of ownership.
Communication Interfaces Supported
Ethernet: TCP/IP
RS232/RS485: Modbus RTU/SCADA
GPRS: TCP/IP/FTP
Analogue Outputs: Voltage Range 0-2.5V
Data Logging
Up to eleven parameters measured and logged at intervals from 1/minute to 1/hour. Transmission in real time (via GPRS) Data sent to TCP/IP address anywhere on the internet
Data can be retrieved directly into SCADA or other systems via serial or analogue outputs, or transmitted remotely using a built-in GPRS modem, which can transmit historical data from an internal logger or relay real-time values. GPRS transmissions can be set to meet operational conditions and needs.
Understanding the network dynamics will help address customer satisfaction issues before they arise. Continuous real-time monitoring immediately alerts to a problem before customer complaints come in. The multi-parameter data can also help predict trends and the likely occurrence of an event. With the aid of Intellisonde data you can reduce customer complaints on cloudy or discoloured water through informed decisions made for timely management and maintenance.
Water quality issues can be attributed to age and condition of the pipes allowing potentially harmful matter, bacteria and microorganisms to make their way into the network, an indicator being a potential reduction in oxygen levels.
In the Majority of networks with the disinfection managed through residuals of either free chlorine or monochloramine, Intellisonde monitoring enables improved disinfection control ensuring healthy water arrives at customer taps.
Different sources of water have unique conductivity and pH characteristics and when multiple sources of supply are available in a network there mixing produces definitive data profiles. Comparison of these and other Intellisonde parameter data is ideal for identifying variations and changes in water quality be they planned or as a result of impurities. The Intellisonde not only assists in network management but also Water Security.
To address public health concerns Intellitect offers three Ion Selective Electrodes (ISE), one of which can be configured on an Intellisonde. For those utilities using water fluoridation for the enhancement of dental public health a Fluoride ISE is available to monitor levels and assist in Control. Ammonium and Nitrate ISE’s are available for those utilities to manage and control harmful levels to tackle not only public health concerns but also environmental obligations.
8-Step work process
Whether you are buying a new sonde or reassessing, we will work with you and walk you through the entire process from beginning to end.
The first step is to assess the network and scope for potential insertion points for the Intellisonde. The assessment document is then reviewed and the most effective locations agreed.
Once the locations have been agreed the Intellisondes are inserted into the network and set up. Each Intellisonde can be configured individually to measure and monitor only the parameters you require.
The Intellisondes constantly monitor the network for any changes in water quality. If an event is detected an alarm can be raised to notify the operator.
The operator gets an instant notification of the location and nature of the problem via a graphical user interface direct to their desktop, mobile device or SCADA infrastructure.
The Intellisonde is designed for direct in-pipe measurement and monitoring providing real-time data that can be interpreted and acted upon.
By matching the Intellisonde to advanced analytics it is feasible that an integrated system can help predict trends and the likely occurrence of events, saving time, costs and avoiding customer complaints.
When the event is cleared the Intellisonde returns to normal operation and continues to monitor the network.
Real time event data is saved and archived for process analysis to better understand your network.
